James is the Research Director of Protein Engineering, leading the development of Pencil’s gene modulation platform.

Previously, James was Head of Molecular Biology at a UK-based startup focussed on industrial enzyme engineering. He also set up and led a CRO-style £4M synthetic biology DNA Foundry.

He received his Ph.D. in Molecular Cell Biology from the University of Liverpool in 2006.

With over two decades of experience in molecular biology, and a career spanning both academia and industry, James is driven to apply his expertise to deliver innovative solutions to solve real world problems.
